Woes Continue For P Chidambaram, SC Rejects Anticipatory Bail, Says Relief Could Mar Probe

Senior Congress leader and former finance Minister P Chidambaram’s woes are set to continue for long. In a set- back the Supreme Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea lodged by the ED in the INX media case

“Anticipatory bail has to be exercised sparingly in cases of economic offences,” the Supreme Court said.

Calling economic offences “serious”, court said anticipatory bail has to be an exception in such cases. “The right to anticipatory bail can’t be a subject matter of fundamental right under Article 32,” the SC added.

“This is not a fit case for grant of anticipatory bail. Investigating agency has to be given enough freedom to probe. Grant of anticipatory bail at this stage will hamper the investigation. Accused may move regular bail before the appropriate court,” the court said.

The Enforcement Directorate has accused Chidambaram of money-laundering in the case involving INX Media, which is being investigated by the CBI.
