In what is seen as setback for the Mamata Banerjee government, the Calcutta high court has ordered Central Bureau of Investigation probe into grievous cases such as murder and rape in alleged post-poll violence in West Bengal.

A five-judge bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal also ordered the formation of a special investigation team to probe all other offences related to the alleged post-poll violence.

The bench said both the investigations will be monitored by the court. It directed the central agency to file a report on its investigation in the next six weeks.

The SIT will comprise IPS officers Director General (Telecommunications) Suman Bala Sahoo, Kolkata Police Commissioner Soumen Mitra and Ranveer Kumar.

The Kolkata Police Commissioner, Soumen Mitra, will be part of that special team, the court said. The BJP had alleged that after the Trinamool’s sweeping victory its goons attacked women members, killed workers, vandalised houses and looted shops and offices belonging to party members.

Reacting to the court order , I’m unhappy with verdict. If in every law &order matter which is entirely within State govt’s jurisdiction the CBI comes in it is transgression on State’s right. I’m sure state govt will judge the situation &take a decision to appeal to a higher court if necessary said Saugata Roy, TMC to ANI
