SSR Probe : NCB At The Forefront While CBI Takes The Back-Seat

It was on August 19, 2020,  that the Supreme Court handed over the Sushant Singh Rajput case to the CBI after a request by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. This followed a sustained and persistent campaign by all news channels demanding a CBI probe into the death of the 34- year old actor . The CBI investigation became the need of the hour after the Mumbai Police and Maharashtra government apparently did not take the case seriously and there were glaring lapses in the probe.

But ever since the SC order as on September 23 , and the CBI taking over there seems to be no clear headway as to how Sushant Singh Rajput died ? Was it  by hanging or suicide or was driven to death? No on knows till now.

The handing of the case to the CBI was welcomed by a eccentric news anchor who jumped in excitement as if he had scored goal in the FIFA World Cup football match. So too were other news channels . Expressing full confidence that the premier investigative agency will conclusively probe the death of SSR and close the case .

The news channels ran running commentary as if it was T20 encounter with their cameramen chasing the CBI officials right from their residence the DRDO guest house . The banner in several news channels were : CBI gets Into Action, CBI in Full form among various others. Hindi channels took it to another level – Nahi bachega Kaatil, CBI Raftaar Par Hai.

This gung- ho about CBI getting to probe the case was sheer over enthusiasm knowing fully well the investigative agencies track record in cases of – Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and Lalit Modi. India still awaits their extradition and face trial in India.

But in a dramatic turn of events, it was not the CBI which made the arrests in the SSR case. It was the NCB ( Narcotics Control Bureau). And CBI taking the back seat.

On what was said to be a probe on the mysterious death of SSR has now completely shifted to drugs use by Bollywood stars. The infatuation of the news channels on the SSR case has been so much that pressing issues like – surge in COVID cases, a flattering economy, tension on the border with China, has literally taken a backseat.

The drug revelations are no doubt shocking but that is not the probe was meant for in the first place. People would be pleased to know how SSR died first an not which Bollywood star takes drugs?.
