President Gives Nod, Appoints Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde As The Next CJI

President Ram Nath Kovind has given his nod and has appointed Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will take oath on November 18. He is due to retire on 23 April 2021

As per the rules the outgoing CJI proposes his successor. Incumbent CJI Gogoi had named Justice Bobde earlier as his successor. Current CJI Justice Ranjan Gogoi retires on November 17.

Justice Bobde is a former Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. He is due to retire on 23 April 2021.

Born on 24 April 1956 at Nagpur, Maharashtra, Justice Bobde studied in the Nagpur University. He joined the Bombay High Court in 2000 as additional judge. In 2012, he became Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Among his notable judgments were – A three judge bench of the Indian Supreme Court, comprising Bobde, Jasti Chelameswar, and Chokkalingam Nagappan, ratified an earlier order of the Supreme Court and clarified that no Indian citizen without an Aadhaar card can be deprived of basic services and government subsidies.

A three-judge bench of the Indian Supreme Court, comprising Bobde, T. S. Thakur and Arjan Kumar Sikri in 2016, in relation to the extreme air pollution in the National Capital Region, suspended the sales of fire crackers in the region
