#MorbiBridgeCollapse : Lawyers’ Body Will Not Defend 9 Accused Arrested ; CM Bhupendra Patel Attends Shradhanjali Programme ; State-Wide Mourning Today ; Search Operations Continue

A lawyers’ body in Gujarat has decided that they will not represent the nine accused arrested over the bridge collapse in Morbi that killed 135 people.

AC Prajapati, senior advocate, Morbi Bar Association said, “Nine accused of the Oreva company have been arrested. The Morbi Bar Association & Rajkot Bar Association have decided not to take their case and represent them. Both the Bar Associations have passed this resolution.

Among the arrested, are managers of Oreva, the company that renovated the bridge, ticket collectors, bridge repair contractors and three security guards whose job was to control the crowds.

Earlier in the day , Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel attended the ‘Shradhanjali’ program for the Morbi tragedy victims. The death toll in the Morbi bridge collapse incident that happened on October 30th stands at 135 so far.

Gujarat is observing state-wide mourning on Wednesday to pay homage to the victims of the Morbi bridge collapse tragedy. Flags were flown at half-mast, an official said, adding that no official or entertainment event will be held on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, The contractors who carried out repairs of the ill-fated suspension bridge at Morbi in Gujarat were not qualified to carry out such jobs, the prosecution told a court reported PTI .

While the bridge flooring was replaced, its cable was not replaced and it could not take the weight of the changed flooring, the prosecution, citing a forensic report, told the magistrate’s court on Tuesday.

The collapse of the bridge on Sunday evening claimed 135 lives. Chief Judicial Magistrate M J Khan remanded four of the arrested accused — two managers of the OREVA Group and two sub-contractors who had repaired the bridge — in police custody till Saturday. The court remanded five other arrested men, including security guards and ticket booking clerks, in judicial custody as police did not seek their custody, prosecutor H S Panchal said.
