West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will remain as chief Minister . This comes after she had  scored a personal point with a massive victory in the Bhabanipur bypoll with a record margin of 58,835 votes. Her victory, which came after her surprise defeat in Nandigram in assembly elections held earlier this year, was expected by most analysts.

Political pundits and voters were watching out for her margin of victory.

Since the elections started in Bengal, Central Govt hatched conspiracies to remove us (from power). I was hurt in my feet so that I don’t contest the polls. I am grateful to the public for voting for us & to ECI for conducting polls within 6 months, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee told ANI

By notching up an all-time high margin in this urban constituency in the heart of Kolkata, Banerjee seems to have underlined her popularity in her home state.

Her party, Trinamool Congress, is also looking at a clean sweep in by-polls to other seats in the state, with massive leads in Murshidabad’s Samserganj and Jangipur assembly constituencies, where elections were held along with Bhabanipur on Thursday.

Banerjee, the TMC candidate for the Bhabanipur seat in south Kolkata, secured 85,263 votes.

Her nearest rival, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Priyanka Tibrewal, garnered 26,428 votes, while Communist Party of India-Marxist’s Srijib Biswas polled 4,226 votes, the Election Commission said.

Reacting to the loss, “I am ‘Man of the Match’ of this game because I contested the election in Mamata Banerjee’s stronghold and got more than 25,000 votes. I will continue doing the hard work,” BJP’s candidate Priyanka Tibrewal told ANI.
