Lakhimpur Kheri Violence : State must dispel the view that the police is dragging its feet in investigation – Supreme Court

Supreme Court while hearing a PIL concerning the Lakhimpur Kheri violence in which 8 persons, including 4 farmers, were killed during a farmers’ protest on October 3 had made some observations .

“We think you are dragging your feet. You please dispel this,” the SC tells the UP government on the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.

Senior advocate Harish Salve appearing for UP government tells the SC that a status report in a sealed cover has been filed in the case.

CJI says the judges were waiting till 1 am last night for UP government’s status report on the Lakhimpur incident but ‘received nothing’.

Salve tells court that the status report has just been filed in a sealed cover. “We said nothing about sealed covers,” says the bench.

Uttar Pradesh government assures the Supreme Court that it will provide protection to the witnesses.

“The investigations can’t be an unending story & the state must dispel the view that the police is dragging its feet in investigation,” says SC.

Supreme Court to UP govt, “Your SIT can recognize who are the most vulnerable witnesses and can be browbeaten… then why only four witness statements have been recorded?.”

Supreme Court adjourns the matter for October 26 as Uttar Pradesh government seeks further time to record statements of other witnesses.
