Justice DY Chandrachud will be the country’s 50th Chief Justice of India . His name as successor was announced by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit. UU Lalit retires on November 8 . Justice DY Chandrachud will take over on November 9 .
Justice Chandrachud would have a tenure of over two years and will retire on November 10, 2024
As per protocol, the incumbent CJI has to send a formal letter recommending his successor to the government. The letter is then handed over to the next CJI and sent to the law minister.
