Several protests erupted in Bihar and Rajasthan over the ‘Agnipath’ scheme which envisages recruitment of soldiers for a short four-year period and retirement of most without pension.

“We work hard to get inducted into the Armed forces. How will the service be for 4 years, with months of training and leaves? How will we protect the nation after getting trained for just 3 years? Govt has to take back this scheme,” said a protestor.

Another protester added, “Where will we go after working for only 4 years? We will be homeless after 4 years of service. So we have jammed the roads; the country’s leaders will now get to know that people are aware.”

A protester in Mungher says, “We demand that the recruitment be done as it used to be done earlier, Tour of Duty (ToD) be rolled back and exams be held as earlier. Nobody will go to Army just for four years.”

The ‘Agniveer’ program for the Indian Navy will have 16 weeks of basic training, two weeks of sea training, and 16 weeks of professional training.

The Agniveer programme for the Army will involve soldiers serving for four years, after which 25 per cent will be retained and allowed to join the Army like a normal soldier.

“Where will we go after working for only 4 years?… we will be homeless after 4 years of service. So we have jammed the roads; the country’s leaders will now get to know that people are aware,” said another protestor in Jehanabad, Bihar
