The Congress party ahead of the Uttar Pradesh polls in 2022 has suffered a a big blow as young face Jitin Prasad quitting the party to join the BJP.

48 year-old Prasada met Union Home Minister Amit Shah before joining the party at the headquarters in the presence of BJP party president JP Nadda and Piyush Goyal.

Later addressing the media , Prasada said, I have a three-generation connection with Congress, so I took this important decision after a lot of deliberation. In the last 8-10 years I have felt that if there is one party that is truly national, it is BJP. Other parties are regional but this is national party.

On why he left the Congress, I felt that what is the relevance of staying in a party if you can’t protect interests of your people or work for them. I felt I was unable to do that at Congress. I thank people in Congress who blessed me all these yrs but now I’ll work as a dedicated BJP worker. I have taken this decision with a lot of deliberation keeping in view all the aspects, in interests of my district, state, and the country and to safeguard interests of the people.

Jitin’s father was former Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Jitendra Prasada.

In his first tenure as Member of the Parliament Jitin Prasad was inducted as Minister of State for Steel and was one of the youngest minister in the Dr Manmohan Singh’s Cabinet(April 2008).

This is the second young leader of the Congress who had joined the BJP. Jyotiraditya Scindia had quit the Congress earlier.
