After it had passed the Lok sabha test by a voice vote amidst a walkout by Congress, SP, Trinamool Congress, DMK and others , Union law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad moved the Triple Talaq bill in the Rajya Sabha, “This is a matter of gender justice, dignity and equality,” he says. “The Triple Talaq law should not be seen from the political prism or vote bank politics law. It is an issue of humanity, woman empowerment and gender equality,” he said.

The BJP has issued a three-line whip to its Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs to be present in both the Houses on Tuesday and support the bills introduced by the government.

The Lok Sabha had on July 25 passed the contentious bill to criminalize triple talaq amidst a walkout by Opposition members who accused the government of singling out a community.

The Bill was passed with 302 votes in favour and 82 against in a division. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, seeks to criminalize the act of instant divorce among Muslims with a three-year jail sentence for men who practice triple talaq, which has been made illegal by the Supreme Court.

Parties such as the Congress, Trinamool Congress and DMK have demanded that it be sent to a parliamentary committee for scrutiny. Even Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United — which is a part of the ruling National Democratic Alliance — has expressed its opposition to the legislation.
