Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa is in governance mood  after winning  the trust vote.  He  has ordered the Kannada and Culture Department not to celebrate Tipu Jayanti on November 10.

During the celebrations last year, Yediyurappa had tweeted, “Nobody will appreciate this celebration. In the interest of the state, state government must stop it. Government’s intention behind Tipu Jayanti celebration is just to satisfy Muslim community.”

BJP Karnataka in its twitter handle termed the celebrations as communal and controversial and hence backed its cancellation

Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s government had celebrated Tipu Jayanti despite the BJPs opposition. “Because they [BJP] object does not mean we should stop.”

Former Karnataka CM and Congress leader Siddaramaiah reacted to the Karnataka BJP government cancelling Tipu Jayanti. “I only started Tipu Jayanti celebrations. According to me, he was the first freedom fighter in the country. BJP people are not secular.”

The celebration of erstwhile Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan’s birth, observed every year on November 10, was started by the Congress-led Siddaramaiah government in the state.
