In an effort  to reduce the farmer’s anger , Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh according to various media reports has agreed to meet majority of their demands of the thousands of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) protesters. The farmers , re on a march from Hardwar to Kisan Ghat to protest against the alleged apathy of the BJP government towards the farming community. But the protests have not been called off despite government assurance at  the time of filing of this report .

The protesters were stopped along the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border earlier as police used teargas shells and water cannons to disperse them. Anticipating breakdown of law and order situation, Delhi Police has imposed week-long prohibitory orders in east Delhi.

Yudhvir Singh, Gen Secretary, Bharatiya Kisan Union, has said that the government has met four-five of their demands and as a result of that they will continue with their protest. There was no consensus on farm loan waiver and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations.

Meanwhile , Congress president Rahul Gandhi has accused the BJP of “brutally beating up” farmers at the Delhi border on International Day of Non-Violence and said that they cannot even air their grievances in the national capital.

Gandhi’s remarks came after farmers marching towards Delhi as part of the Bharatiya Kisan Union’s protest call over demands ranging from farm loan waiver to cut in fuel prices, were stopped at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border with police using water cannons to disperse them.

“On International Day of Non-Violence, the BJP’s two-year Gandhi Jayanti celebrations began with the brutal beating of farmers peacefully coming to Delhi. Now, the farmers cannot even air the grievances coming to the capital!” he tweeted in Hindi.
