Indian tennis stars have given the country the moment to rejoice at the 18th Asian Games held in the Jaakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. The team before going into the games was hit hard by the last minute pull-out by the 45- year-old legendary Leader Paes. And thereby putting a question mark on the tennis team’s chances at the event.
The doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan have done the nation proud by winning the Gold medal in the men’s doubles tennis event against Kazakhstan’s men’s doubles pair.
Bopanna and Sharan, who were the top seeds in the event, played to their billing throughout the tournament and beat Kazakhstan’s Aleksandr Bublik and Denis Yevseyev 6-3, 6-4 to scoop the top prize in the event.
With this win, India’s medals tally has now swelled up to 22, including 6 gold medals, 4 silver and 12 bronze.
Before Bopanna and Sharan, Leander Paes has won three Asian Games men’s doubles gold — once with Gaurav Natekar and twice with Mahesh Bhupathi. After that in the 2010 Asian Games, Somdev Devvarman and Sanam Singh won the men’s doubles gold in Guangzhou.
