In a relief of sorts a Delhi Court has granted anticipatory bail to Shashi Tharoor, Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram in the  death case of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

The bail was granted on a surety of Rs 1 lakh. The court said that he cannot tamper with evidence and if he needs to go abroad he has to take permission of the court.

The Delhi Court had earlier reserved his bail plea as the SIT had opposed it .

Following the granting of anticipatory bail , Tharoor as summoned by Patiala House courts will  now appear before it on July 7 and apply for regular bail, according to his lawyer.

In his plea filed through advocate Vikas Pahwa, Tharoor said the chargesheet has been filed without arrest and the SIT (special investigation team) has categorically stated that investigation has been concluded and no custodial interrogation is required.

“The law is very clear that if the charge sheet is filed without arrest the bail is inevitable. We have only requested for protection so that we appear in the court on July 7,” Pahwa said.

The Congress leader had moved the court earlier in the week , seeking anticipatory bail.

Moments after the Patiala House courts had issued summons and asking him to appear before it,  the Congress MP , Shashi Tharoor had given his statement  on the issue.

In a statement, he said he maintains steadfast conviction that ultimately the truth will prevail through the judicial system. “I would like to reiterate my position that I find the charges preposterous and baseless, the product of a malicious and vindictive campaign against myself.

“I will continue to vigorously contest these charges and maintain steadfast conviction that ultimately the truth will prevail through the judicial system that we are privileged to have in our country,” he said.
