Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case : Palaniswami Government Recommends Release Of 7 Convicts

The Tamil Nadu government has advocated the discharge of all seven convicts in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to the governor underneath article 161 of the Constitution.

The development came on Sunday after the Supreme Court closing week directed Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit to take a choice on a petition filed through AG Perarivalan, one of the convicts. A resolution was exceeded at the cabinet assembly chaired by AIADMK leader  and Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami inside the nation secretariat, fisheries minister D Jayakumar stated.

A replica of the resolution can be sent to the governor at once.

“The cupboard advised governor Purohit to apply his powers beneath article 161 of the constitution to release Murugan, Santhan, AG Perarivalan, Nalini, Rober Pious, Ravichandran and Jayakumar,” the minister advised journalists at the secretariat premises.

Article 161 deals with the judicial powers of the governor and gives him the strength to pardon a person who has been proved guilty in courtroom.

“The governor is sure to move with the aid of the decision taken inside the cabinet meeting. It is mandatory to stick with the cabinet’s choice,” Jayakumar stated.

In 2014, former chief minister J Jayalalithaa had chaired a cupboard meeting, after which she urged the Centre to launch the seven convicts who have been in jail for over 27 years. But the Centre had then opposed it.
