18th Asian Games : India’s Medal Rush Continues, Manjit Singh Bags Gold in 800M

In yet another good day for India on the track and field events, Manjit Singh upstaged pre-race favourite compatriot Jinson Johnson to win gold in men’s 800m in a 1-2 finish for India.

The 28-year-old Manjit ran his personal best time of 1 minute and 46.15 seconds to win his maiden major international medal.

Johnson, who smashed legendary Sriram Singh’s 42-year-old 800m national record in June during the National Inter-State Athletics Championships, finished second in 1:46.35. He holds the national record of 1:45.65.

Abdalla Abubaker of Qatar who was leading the race finished third in 1:46.38.

India’s mixed relay team comprising – Mohammed Anas, Poovamma, Hima Das and Arokia Rajiv running last in mixed relay final bagged a creditable silver medal. The team clocked 3:11:89 seconds while Bahrain raced away with gold with a time of 3:15:71 seconds. Kazakhstan finished third to take bronze.

Meanwhile, the Indian table tennis men’s team settled for a historic bronze medal after losing 0-3 to South Korea in a lop-sided semifinal at the 18th Asian Games.

The team comprising G Sathiyan, Achanta Sharath Kamal and A Amalraj couldn’t put up a fight against the mighty Koreans, who set up a summit clash against defending champions China in a repeat of 2014 edition.
